Essential Woodworking Tools: A Guide to Cutters for Edge Banding Machines

Edge Banding Machines also called Edge Banders which are essential tools in woodworking. They can bond the edge banding material to the edge of the wood, enhancing the appearance and durability of furniture and wood products. Edge Bander Machines are widely used by furniture, cabinet, and other panel furniture manufacturers for MDF, blockboard, solid wood, chipboard, polymer door panels, plywood, and other straight-line edge banding and trimming.

There are many edge banding machines on the market, the more famous brands are Homag, Biesse, SCM Group, IMA, Holz-Her, Felder, and so on. Edge banding machines are classified based on the working principle:

  • Hot-Melt Edge banders: These machines use hot-melt adhesive as an edge banding material, which is bonded to the edge of the wood by means of a hot-melt adhesive system.
  • Pressure Sensitive Edge banders: These machines use pressure sensitive tape as the edge banding material and glue the tape to the edge of the wood by applying pressure.
  • PUR Edge bander: These machines use polyurethane adhesive as an edge banding material with high adhesion and waterproofing properties.

Classification based on functionality and degree of automation:

  • Manual Edge bander: These machines require the operator to manually control the feeding of the material and the operation of the machine.
  • Semi-Automatic Edge bander: has some automated functions, such as feeding and cutting of the edge banding material, but still requires the intervention of the operator.
  • Automatic Edge bander: with highly automated functions, it can automatically complete the feeding, cutting, gluing and trimming of the edge banding material.

In addition, edge banders are also called Linear edge banding machine and Flexible edge bander in the woodworking market.

With the development of CNC industry towards industry 4.0, the function of edge banders is more and more complete and intelligent. Among them, edge banding tools play a vital role, they determine the quality and appearance of the final edge banding.

The cutters & tools used in edge banding machines are pre-milling cutters, end trimming saw blades, roughing trim cutters, fine trimming cutters, tracking cutters or contour trimming cutters, scraping blades, and some semi-automatic machines will also use strip cutters. So, in order to facilitate the understanding, the following article will take the automatic edge banders as an example, through the edge banding machine actually involved in the workflow, a detailed description of the edge bander cutters used and their role in the workflow:

Pre-milling: the use of pre-mill cutter on the cutting board saw, cutter saw processing caused by ripple marks, burrs or not vertical phenomenon, again to modify, in order to achieve a better sealing effect. Glue sealing: through special structure, make the sealing plate and sealing material evenly coated with glue on both sides to ensure more solid adhesion.

End cutting: we also call it front-end and back-end cutting, when the boards are transported with the conveyor belt to the front cutting or back cutting position, at this time, the cylinder drags the auto-alignment device vertically downward, and the saw blade cutter is also moved downward together, due to the cooperation between the auto-alignment device and the end trimming saw blade, the round saw blade will cut off the exposed edge band at front and back ends. The purpose is to ensure that the ends of the edge banding are flush, remove unnecessary lengths, and make the edge banding fit the dimensions of the wood perfectly.

Trimming: both adopt the structure of automatic tracking by mould and high-frequency high-speed motor to ensure that the upper and lower parts of trimmed boards are flat and smooth. It is used to trim away the excess sealing material on the top and bottom of the sealing strip of the processed plate.

  • Rough trimming: the rough trim cutter is a flat trimming cutter & knife (we also called rough trimming milling cutter). It is used for trimming the excess part of veneer sealing. Because when sealing veneer, cannot directly use the fine trimming cutter (or R-shaped cutter), veneer is generally 0.4mm thick, if the direct use of fine trimming tool, easy to cause breakage. In addition, rough repair can also be used to seal PVC, acrylic when the first flat repair process.
  • Fine trimming: the fine trim cutters R-shaped knife, which is to take the edge banding strip bonded to the wood board and make it into an edge with an R-curved shape by further fine trimming and shaping on top of the rough trimming. It is mainly used for PVC and acrylic sealing strips of panel furniture, and it is better for sealing strips above 0.8mm thick.

Imitation tracking: The tracing cutters used to mill the 4 corners of the bonded edge band into a curved edge with an R-shape, increasing the beauty of the edge.

Scraping: The scrapers to scrape away the rotating wave cutter marks left on top of the edge banding trimmed on both sides of the wood board, the R angle of scraper blade and the fine trimming cutter are the same.

Buffing: use cotton polishing& buffing wheel to clean up the processed plate, and make the end face of edging smoother by polishing.

Slotting: used for wardrobe side panels, bottom panels and other direct slotting, reducing the process of cutting saws more convenient and quicker; can also be used for door panels, aluminum cladding grooving.
